…how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? Hebrews 2:3 NIV
Two problems emerge in our humanity:
- in our pursuits (for pleasure, power, recognition, etc.), we harm others and sometimes even ourselves;
- and when we discover our selfish hearts are to blame, we justify our actions.
The Bible refers to the first problem as idolatry and the second as sin. And the result of sin is death (Romans 6:23).
I recognized this pattern in my life at seventeen. Fear of rejection drove me to deception, and fear of exposure led to isolation and depression. I was hanging from the cliff I’d constructed dangling over destruction – my fingers were slipping and darkness closed in…
Just in time, my superhero, Jesus Christ, came to my rescue! Not only did he lift me from the edge of the cliff, he saw through the mess I’d made and forgave me. He cleansed my conscience, relieved my fears, and redirected my steps.
But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit…(Titus 3:4-5 NIV)
This salvation is for everyone – For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NIV)
You’re dying of a sexually transmitted disease and the doctor tells you they’ve found a cure!
You’ve been an alcoholic and you’re on a liver transplant waiting list and a donor-liver arrives just in time!
You’re showing off and get too close to the cliff and a hand reaches out for you just before you fall!
Whether or not you realize it, we’re all hanging from the cliff we’ve constructed dangling over destruction. The question is, will you grab the hand of the Savior offered to you?
How can you escape if you ignore so great a salvation?
