If Indeed You Have Tasted…

This morning, I read the second chapter of I Peter and came to this verse…

if indeed you have tasted that the LORD is good (I Peter 2:3 ESV).

The verses prior to this statement tell us to put away malice, slander, hypocrisy, deceit, and envy and long for the pure spiritual milk by which we may grow up into salvation.

In other words, if we have experienced the goodness of God in salvation through Jesus Christ, we will long to know him more through his Word (the Bible). In the same chapter, Peter goes on to remind us we have received mercy and are the people of God. From this position we proclaim the excellencies of him who called us out of darkness and into his glorious light – Jesus (I Peter 2:9 ESV).

Although I have indeed tasted, and am delivered from darkness into the glorious light of God through Jesus Christ, I sometimes find myself retreating into the shadows which once described my life. I envy those who seem to have it all together; I join the gossip and add my slander; I want others to see the good in me rather than the truth of my struggle with sin.

God’s living and active word pierced my soul this morning. My response is to seek forgiveness and to repent. The grace and mercy of God is sweet to my soul.

I now stand firmly with renewed conviction in God’s light, and proclaim the excellency of Jesus, who:

  • Reveals the beauty and majesty of God
  • Discloses himself in his Word
  • Speaks truth to my heart
  • Rebukes me with gentleness and kindness
  • Restores my peace, joy, and hope
  • Loves me unconditionally, completely, and forever.

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! (Psalm 34:8 ESV)
