Keep informed! It is easy to get caught in the homeschool bubble and forget about the rest of the world. It will serve your high school students best if you read and discuss current events with them. They should be prepared to respond to questions about the events that are happening right now. For instance, how will they respond to the Ebola outbreak? Do they even know where Sierra Leone is located? How about the happenings in Syria, do your children know the neighboring countries and how they are handling the influx of refugees? Next week is election day, have you discussed who is running and why this election is a significant one?
This is the also the time to teach your children how to respond to those who don’t agree with your worldview or values. Don’t miss this opportunity to prepare your children. If you don’t teach them how to read and respond to the news with a critical thought process, they will believe everything that the media throws at them. That’s a frightening thought!
